LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLICANT STANDARDS AND HIRING PROCESS INFORMATION

 

APPLICANT STANDARDS - law enforcement positions

the comal county sheriff's office has adopted the following standards for the selection process of new applicants for law enforcement positions such as: corrections officers, sheriff deputies, reserve sheriff deputies, communications officers and investigators as indicated.  our policies and standards will conform to affirmative action guidelines.  ALL applicants must have a valid Texas Drivers License.

Applicants must comply with licensing requirements of the texas commission on law enforcement  TCOLE and as required for the applicable posted job position/description.

The applicant shall comply with the standards of the comal county sheriff's office;

1. All law enforcement applicants (deputy, reserve deputy, corrections, and investigator) must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire.

2. Minimum required is a valid basic certificate from TCOLE for all deputy sheriff and reserve deputy sheriff positions.

3. Pass a vision test of 20/20 with each eye through corrective action for all deputy sheriff and reserve deputy sheriff positions.

4. Obtain basic corrections officer  TCOLE certification within one year from date of hire (if not currently certified) for all corrections officers (provided by comal county).

5. Obtain basic telecommunication officer TCOLE certification within one year from date of hire (if not currently certified) for all communications officers (provided by comal county).

6. Obtain texas criminal information center and national crime information center certification within one year from date of hire (if not already certified) for all communications officers (provided by comal county).

CHARACTER:

All applicants must be of good moral character and habits. any applicant, who has been charged or convicted of a class b misdemeanor or a crime of moral turpitude within the last 10 years, shall be disqualified and not eligible for hiring. anyone charged, or convicted of a class a misdemeanor or above shall not be eligible for hiring.

TRAFFIC RECORDS: (not applicable to Communications Officers)

1. Applicant must not have been Convicted of four (4) or more hazardous traffic violations within 12 months preceding date of application.

2. Applicant must not have been convicted of seven (7) or more hazardous traffic violations within 24 months preceding date of application. 

3. Applicant must not have been convicted as a habitual violator within the last five (5) years preceding date of application.

4. Applicant must not have been convicted of fsra (failure to stop and render aid).

5. Applicant must not have been convicted of dwls (driving while licensed suspended) within the last five (5) years.  Applicant must not currently be on probation for any traffic offense.

3. APPLICANTS PASSING PRE-SCREEN ARE SCHEDULED FOR AGILITY TEST.

4. APPLICANTS PASSING THE AGILITY TEST ARE SCHEDULED FOR AN ORAL INTERVIEW WITH A PANEL OF SHERIFF'S CORRECTIONS OFFICERS.

5. APPLICANTS ARE PLACED IN AN ELIGIBILITY POOL BASED ON RANKING OF SCORE BY PANEL MEMBERS.

6. SHERIFF'S OFFICE DETERMINES NUMBER OF HIRES NEEDED FROM ELIGIBLE POOL FOR RESPECTIVE HIRING DEPARTMENT (I.E., CORRECTIONS OFFICERS, COMMUNICATION OFFICERS, OR SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES) AND ADVISES HUMAN RESOURCES OF NUMBERS AND ELIGIBLES NAMES.

7. HUMAN RESOURCES PREPARES CONDITIONAL OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT WITH TERMS EXPLAINED AND DEADLINES FOR CONDITIONS SET FORTH (I.E., COMPLETION OF BACKGROUND QUESTIONAIRE - TO INCLUDE APPLICANT PROVIDING CURRENT COPY OF CREDIT CHECK NOT MORE THAN 3 MONTHS OLD (include any and all requested documents: court papers, to include any disposition documents, bankruptcy, if applicable, and the Authority to Release Information Waiver form which is provided by Human Resources and which must be signed and notarized, DRUG TEST, PHYSCHOLOGICAL EXAM AND PHYSICAL EXAM (DEPENDING ON POSITION).

8. IF APPLICANT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES AND PASSES ALL TESTS, EXAMS, AND THE BACKGROUND CHECK THEY WILL BE OFFICIALLY OFFERED EMPLOYMENT.

9. ONCE APPLICANT IS OFFICIALLY OFFERED EMPLOYMENT,  AND HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE REQUIREMENTS AS STATED ABOVE, HUMAN RESOURCES WILL SCHEDULE APPLICANT FOR IN-PROCESSING.

NOTE:  LENGTH OF TIME FOR THIS PROCESS WILL VARY DUE TO DIFFERENCES  WITH EACH APPLICANT.  DO NOT CALL TO CHECK ON PACKAGE.  ONCE YOU ARE CONDITIONALLY OFFERED EMPLOYMENT, YOU WILL BE KEPT  APPRISED OF THE PROCESS BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT AND/OR SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

5. SHERIFF'S OFFICE DETERMINES NUMBER OF HIRES NEEDED FROM ELIGIBLE POOL FOR RESPECTIVE HIRING DEPARTMENT (I.E., CORRECTIONS OFFICERS, COMMUNICATION OFFICERS, OR SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES) AND ADVISES HUMAN RESOURCES OF NUMBERS AND ELIGIBLES NAMES.
